ABOUT THIS CONCERT
The 2024 Ojai Festival is curated by Mitsuko Uchida, this year's festival music director. Blending the characteristic Ojai mix of old and new, familiar and unfamiliar, we're excited to be a part of this curated journey. As a guest artist, the MCO can be experienced in different formations, with programmes all featuring works close to Mitsuko Uchida and the American musical landscape.
The programme for this concert features renowned classical compositions from Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, separated by a contemporary piece from Jörg Widmann. Haydn's Symphony No. 46 with its timeless beauty and sophistication, broke with symphonic conventions. And in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 17 the woodwinds play a prominent role in the opening, a rarity in Mozart's time.
The Chorale Quartet by Jörg Widmann, a composition skillfully interwoven into the fabric of the program, offers a contemporary twist on traditional choral music. This captivating quartet adds a distinct touch to the musical journey and provides the audience with the unique and enriching experience of seeing an orchestra perform without a conductor, relying fully on their capabilities of hearing and communicating through their instruments.
