ABOUT THIS CONCERT
The 2024 Ojai Festival is curated by Mitsuko Uchida, this year's festival music director. Blending the characteristic Ojai mix of old and new, familiar and unfamiliar, we're excited to be a part of this curated journey. As a guest artist, the MCO can be experienced in different formations, with programmes all featuring works close to Mitsuko Uchida and the American musical landscape.
This programme highlights three contemporary composers. Opening with John Zorn's Road Runner, a lively piece inspired by the Warner Brothers cartoon of the same name. We're joined by Ljubinka Kulisic who will perform the accordion solo. Missy Mazzoli's Dark with Excessive Bright then pays homage to the sound of the double bass, with MCO principle double bass player Rick Stotijn taking the solo. The piece brings together string techniques from different centuries, whilst simultaneously weaving repeated chords into mesmerising textures. And bringing the program to a close is American composer John Adams' Shaker Loops.
