ABOUT THIS CONCERT
The 2024 Ojai Festival is curated by Mitsuko Uchida, this year's festival music director. Blending the characteristic Ojai mix of old and new, familiar and unfamiliar, we're excited to be a part of this curated journey. As a guest artist, the MCO can be experienced in different formations, with programmes all featuring works close to Mitsuko Uchida and the American musical landscape.
Claude Debussy's Prélude à l’après-midi d’une faune, a symphonic poem so to speak, opens the programme. The evocative orchestration paints a vivid picture of a faun's afternoon reverie. Kaija Saariaho's Lichtbogen ("Arcs of Light") continues this dreamlike state, transcending the boundaries of traditional orchestral music. This composition marked the composer's inaugural venture into incorporating computer technology within the realm of purely instrumental music. This innovative approach introduced a new dimension to the compositional process, as harmonic material was generated through the analysis of brief transitions performed by a violin and cello.
Joining this link of technology and music is Esa-Pekka Salonen's Kínēma, the title revealing that the composition is based on film scores. The movement, Elegy crafts a moving tribute that resonates with emotional depth and sincerity. Masterfully blending both soloist and orchestra, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 27, closes the programme.
