ABOUT THIS CONCERT
Mozart Momentum 1785/1786 reunites the MCO with our Artistic Partner Leif Ove Andsnes to look deeply at two of the most creative years in Mozart’s life, through a mix of chamber and orchestral music, plus piano concertos performed with the same intimate agility and self-directed approach that was the hallmark of our celebrated collaboration during the Beethoven Journey (2013–15).
The basis for Mozart Momentum 1785/1786 is the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 20, a landmark work written in 1785 that dramatically reshaped the relationship between soloist and orchestra, paving the way for more dynamic communication, dialogue, interaction, and freedom of exchange – echoing the MCO’s own unique approach.
In this final concert of our residency at Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie, we focus on the intimacy of Mozart's chamber works from this period: expressive songs sung by Christiane Karg, and two pieces that have the piano at their core, interacting with MCO Principals.
