ABOUT THIS CONCERT
Mozart Momentum 1785/1786 reunites the MCO with our Artistic Partner Leif Ove Andsnes to look deeply at two of the most creative years in Mozart’s life, through a mix of chamber and orchestral music, plus piano concertos performed with the same intimate agility and self-directed approach that was the hallmark of our celebrated collaboration during the Beethoven Journey (2013–15).
The basis for Mozart Momentum 1785/1786 is the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 20, a landmark work written in 1785 that dramatically reshaped the relationship between soloist and orchestra, paving the way for more dynamic communication, dialogue, interaction, and freedom of exchange – echoing the MCO’s own unique approach.
In this performance at Berlin's famous Philharmonie, where we recorded the album Mozart Momentum 1785 for Sony Classical, we immerse audiences in the music that followed this landmark work: two dazzling piano concertos with Andsnes from 1786, framing the drama of the Prague symphony led by MCO Concertmaster Matthew Truscott.
The concert will be preceded by Unboxing Mozart, our digital education initiative that brings listeners into to the music, to experience Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 from the inside.
