ABOUT THIS CONCERT
Mozart Momentum 1785/1786 reunites the MCO with our Artistic Partner Leif Ove Andsnes to look deeply at two of the most creative years in Mozart’s life, through a mix of chamber and orchestral music, plus piano concertos performed with the same intimate agility and self-directed approach that was the hallmark of our celebrated collaboration during the Beethoven Journey (2013–15).
The basis for Mozart Momentum 1785/1786 is the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 20, a landmark work written in 1785 that dramatically reshaped the relationship between soloist and orchestra, paving the way for more dynamic communication, dialogue, interaction, and freedom of exchange – echoing the MCO’s own unique approach.
In this first performance of our residency at Vienna's Musikverein, in the city that was the cradle of Mozart's creativity during these years, the MCO and Andsnes take this landmark work, pair it with the concerto
that immediately followed, and use the two to frame the drama of
the Prague symphony, written the following year, and led by MCO Concertmaster Matthew Truscott.
