ABOUT THIS CONCERT
Broadcast Date:
5 September 2016 at 20:00 on SRF2 Kultur
In keeping with this year’s festival focus on women in music, under the title PrimaDonna, the MCO gives a concert (23 August) featuring Barbara Hannigan as soloist and conductor.
The varied programme features works by Claude Debussy, Jean Sibelius, Joseph Haydn, Alban Berg and George Gershwin presented in unconventional ways. One of the highlights is Bill Elliot’s arrangement of George Gershwin’s Suite from Girl Crazy, which was commissioned by Barbara Hannigan for this occasion.
The collaboration between Barbara Hannigan and the MCO dates back to 2012, when they performed the hugely successful premiere of George Benjamin’s opera Written on Skin in Aix-en-Provence. Only recently, in March 2016, they renewed this success by performing a semi-staged concert performance of Benjamin’s masterpiece in Germany, Spain and the UK. Barbara Hannigan conducted the MCO for the first time at the Lucerne Festival in 2014.
