ABOUT THIS CONCERT
Since the creation of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra (LFO) by Claudio Abbado in 2003, members of the MCO have formed the core of this group which regularly convened during the Summer Festival. For the third time now, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra (LFO) is giving performances on the weekend before Easter, in addition to those in summer, thus celebrating a short, but intense Spring Festival. In a mix of orchestral and chamber concerts, the Orchestra focuses on a single composer each time - Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in 2024, and Ludwig van Beethoven in 2025.
"You can never reach the limits of what the greatness of a piece like the Ninth of Ludwig van Beethoven can bring to you as a human being", the Festival's Music Director and tonigh's conductor Riccardo Chailly said in an 2024 interview for ARTE about Beethoven's iconic last symphony with its famous "Ode to Joy". Beethoven premiered it on 7th May 1824 in Vienna, so this evening may be called a belated 200th birthday concert.
