ABOUT THIS CONCERT
Broadcast Dates:
Live on Radio Classique
This is the first of two programmes the Mahler Chamber Orchestra performs at the chamber music festival Rencontres Musicales in Évian-les-Bains. For the second time in a row, the orchestra has been invited by the Quatuor Modigliani to take part in its festival. In accordance with the festival’s philosophy of exploring chamber music in its various forms, this concert programme features diverse repertoire:
Drawing parallels between Parisian and Viennese works from around 1900, this programme ranges from Erik Satie’s Jack in the Box for solo piano to Gustav Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, in a chamber orchestra version by Arnold Schönberg. In this work, as well as in Maurice Ravel’s Chansons madécasses, French mezzo-soprano Karine Deshayes will be making her MCO debut. The programme also includes Arnold Schönberg’s Chamber Symphony no. 1, arranged by Anton Webern, and Claude Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un Faune, arranged by Benno Sachs.
This concert takes place in the extraordinary venue of La Grange au Lac: the concert hall is made entirely of wood, which provides fantastic acoustics and is set in idyllic surroundings, overlooking Lake Geneva.
