PROGRAMME
GUSTAV MAHLER: Symphony No. 6 in A minor
- Conductor Riccardo Chailly
- Lucerne Festival Orchestra including Mahler Chamber Orchestra
ABOUT THIS CONCERT
The Mahler Chamber Orchestra returns to Switzerland this
summer for their annual residency at the 2019 Lucerne Festival. The orchestra
can be heard five times in this year's edition: four times as part of the
Lucerne Festival Orchestra, founded by Claudio Abbado in 2003 and which
features MCO musicians at its core, and once under its own name.
Each concert expresses this year's theme of "Power," and takes place within Jean Nouvel's stunning Kultur- und Kongresszentrum Lucerne (KKL), a combination of exquisite acoustics and iconic architecture that sits on the shore of the Lake Lucerne.
For their final appearance at this year's festival, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and Music Director Riccardo Chailly programme a single work that resounds with the tragedy of fate: Mahler's Symphony No. 6. Pulling together emotional extremes that culminate in an almost-apocalyptic conclusion, complete with hammer blows, this symphony is prophetic, expressive, and a powerful experience to listen to.
