"Thou shalt arise, yea arise."
With these words, Mahler begins the towering finale of his second symphony, where more than a hundred instruments and voices resound for the most dramatic climax in all of music.
And arise we
shall. Nicknamed "The Resurrection," this symphony is a fitting way to
mark the return of cultural landmarks after more than a year of near
silence across the world. A powerful testament to our need to
share the collective experience of music again, this performance crowns
the 2021 Beethovenfest Bonn, after being rescheduled from last year.
Joining the MCO, who return to the festival after five years, is the rising French conductor Maxime Pascal, vocal soloists Léa Trommenschlager and Marianne Crebassa, plus the Prager Philharmonischer Choir. This is the MCO debut of both Pascal and Trommenschlager. Marianne Crebassa last performed with us in Cologne in October 2020, and the Choir was part of The Beethoven Journey, singing the Choral Fantasy with us and Artistic Partner Leif Ove Andsnes in 2014.
