ABOUT THIS CONCERT
Isabelle Faust and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra reconvene on this tour for further concerts of a special programme that was prepared and first performed in March 2016 during a tour to Aix-en-Provence and Dijon.
Isabelle Faust is one of the orchestra’s Artistic Partners and has collaborated regularly with the MCO since 2008. A versatile artist who is equally at home with orchestral and chamber music, she and the orchestra share a sense of chamber music playing that they bring to ensembles of any size. This programme combines both orchestral and chamber pieces: works by the nineteenth-century composers Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Schumann are set among excerpts from Johann Sebastian Bach’s The Art of Fugue, arranged for strings and wind instruments.
The Philharmonie Essen and the MCO have been close partners since the days of the orchestra’s former North Rhine-Westphalia residency; they continue to collaborate regularly through the annual MCO Academy. The MCO appeared in Essen most recently in February, for the MCO Academy 2016 project featuring Mahler’s Second Symphony led by Conductor Laureate Daniel Harding.
