ABOUT THIS CONCERT
Since the creation of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra (LFO) by Claudio Abbado in 2003, members of the MCO have formed the core of this group which regularly convenes during the yearly Lucerne Summer Festival. For the third time now, the LFO is giving performances on the weekend before Easter, in addition to those in summer, thus celebrating a short, but intense Spring Festival. In a mix of orchestral and chamber concerts, the Orchestra focuses on a single composer each time - Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in 2024, and Ludwig van Beethoven this spring 2025.
Both works by Ludwig van Beethoven performed this evening were premiered together in Vienna on December 22, 1808, in a marathon concert that also included the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies as well as the composer’s Choral Fantasy. It was the last time that Beethoven, taking over the piano part, appeared on stage with an orchestra.
The Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68, also known as the "Pastorale" (literally: "a shepherd's tune"), is one of Beethoven's few works containing explicitly programmatic content, depicting scenes of country life as perceived by a city dweller enjoying the countryside. Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto, with its well-known opening theme by the solo piano, is being interpreted tonight by young Japanese pianist Mao Fujita, who made his debut with the LFO in 2022, interpreting Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto.
The Mahler Chamber Orchestra first shared the stage with Mao Fujita under conductor Elim Chan in November 2024.
