ABOUT THIS CONCERT
Since the creation of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra (LFO) by Claudio Abbado in 2003, members of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra have formed the core of this group. Under the baton of Festival Director Riccardo Chailly, the Orchestra will for the first time present itself at the Elbphilhamonie tonight.
23-year-old violinist Daniel Lozakovich, who has been on stage with the LFO and Beethoven in spring this year, will be interpreting tonight the only concerto of Jean Sibelius, written and rewritten several times by the composer. Its virtuosity, combined with drama, blooming melodies, as well as deep romanticism, has made this classic among the violin concertos a favourite with audiences for many years.
Sergei
Rachmaninoff’s popular Symphonic Dances were the composer’s last work, dedicated
to the Philadelphia Orchestra and its then-chief conductor Eugene Ormandy, who
premiered the composition in 1921. The three movements combine energetic
rhythmic sections, reminiscent of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, with some of
Rachmaninoff’s lushest harmonies. The work, which Rachmaninoff himself
considered his best, includes several quotations from his earlier compositions
and can be regarded as a summing-up of his entire career as a composer.
