ABOUT THIS CONCERT
Since the creation of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra by Claudio Abbado in 2003, members of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra have formed the core of this group. Under the baton of Festival Director Riccardo Chailly, Paris will be the first concert venue of this short tour which will then continue to Hamburg.
23-year-old violinist Daniel Lozakovich will play with the LFO for the second time this year, presenting the only violin concerto of Jean Sibelius. Its virtuosity, combined with drama, blooming melodies, as well as deep romanticism, has made this classic among violin concertos a favourite with audiences for many years.
Sergei Rachmaninoff’s popular Symphonic Dances were the composer’s last work, dedicated to the Philadelphia Orchestra and its then-chief conductor Eugene Ormandy, who premiered the composition in 1921. The three movements combine energetic rhythmic sections, reminiscent of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, with some of Rachmaninoff’s lushest harmonies. The work, which Rachmaninoff himself considered his best, includes several quotations from his earlier compositions and can be regarded as a summing-up of his entire career as a composer.
