F. MENDELSSOHN BARTHOLDY: Symphony no. 4 "Italian"
L.v. BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 5

ABOUT THIS CONCERT
As we are in Italy, what could be more fitting for the second half of this concert evening than Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s fourth symphony in A Major, conceived during the composer’s trip to Italy in 1830? “It will be the jolliest piece I have ever done, especially the last movement”, Mendelssohn commented in a letter to his sister Fanny.
In contrast with this light-hearted work stands the well-known Fifth Symphony in C minor, of which E.T.A. Hoffmann, a music critic and contemporary of Beethoven’s, said: “Radiant beams shoot through this region’s deep night, and we become aware of gigantic shadows which, rocking back and forth, close in on us and destroy everything within us except the pain of endless longing.”
