ABOUT THIS CONCERT
The Mahler Chamber Orchestra's 2024 residency at the Schlossfestspiele Ludwigsburg Festival brings us together with conductor Anja Bihlmaier and violinist Renaud Capuçon. The programme focuses on Romantics, Louise Farrenc, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms.
Both Schumann's Violin Concerto and Brahms Symphony No. 4 provoked controversial reactions at the time. Whilst Schumann's concerto was hidden away in the back of a cupboard as the work of a madman, Brahms' symphony spread like wildfire as progressive orchestral music.
The French composer Louise Farrenc, who Schumann well regarded, starting exploring orchestral music for the first time with her overtures. At the time this was quite unusual, as composing was predominantly a male domain in the 19th century.
This concert is the first that the MCO performs under Bihlmaier's baton, a conductor known for her musical intuition and ability to combine passion and precision. Together with Renaud Capuçon, a long-time friend of the MCO, we cannot wait to explore the complex works in this concert.
This concert will be recorded by SWR (Südwestrundfunk) Radio and broadcast on SWR Kultur on Thursday, 29 August, 2024 at 8.03 pm (ARD Radiofestival).
