ABOUT THIS CONCERT
The Mahler Chamber Orchestra joins forces with Conductor Laureate Daniel Harding and Håkan Hardenberger in a programme pairing Ludwig van Beethoven with works by Edgar Varèse and Mark-Anthony Turnage. The trumpet concerto Håkan, which Turnage wrote for Håkan Hardenberger, receives its Italian premiere in this concert.
Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Håkan is the second collaboration between the British composer and the Swedish trumpet player, following their musical “psychological study” From the Wreckage in 2004. The programme also features Edgar Varèse’s Intégrales, composed for small orchestra and 17 percussion instruments, which explores a new world of sound. The final work of the evening, Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony no. 4, returns to the MCO’s core repertoire: the orchestra performed it most recently in May 2015, during its Beethoven cycle with Daniele Gatti.
The concert on 19 June is the MCO’s second visit to Ravenna with Daniel Harding since 2008. It is part of the 27th edition of the Ravenna Festival, the important Italian festival closely connected to Riccardo Muti, and takes place inside the magnificent architecture of brickwork, marble and glass which is Palazzo Mauro de André.
