ABOUT THIS CONCERT
This Chamber Music concert is part of a three-day event at Konzerthaus Dortmund from 10 to 12 March 2016, entitled Zeitinsel George Benjamin, which puts the spotlight on composer/conductor George Benjamin.
The event features works by Schönberg and Bach, two composers who greatly influenced George Benjamin, as well as a concert version of George Benjamin’s own chamber opera, Into the Little Hill.
Into the Little Hill is a lyric tale in two parts written for soprano, contralto, and an ensemble of 15 players. It represents the first collaboration between George Benjamin and playwright Martin Crimp, and paved the way for their masterpiece Written on Skin, which is their second collaboration.
Into the Little Hill is based on the myth of the Ratcatcher of Hamelin. It premiered in Paris in November 2006 with soprano Anu Komsi and mezzo-soprano Hilary Summers, who also perform at this concert.
