ABOUT THIS CONCERT

This tour presents two distinct sides of Vienna through a programme featuring works by Schubert and Webern – both composers who are strongly associated with the Austrian capital, albeit at very different times in music history.

In this programme, Artistic Advisor Daniele Gatti and the MCO continue their examination of the symphonic tradition by shifting their focus from the symphonies of Beethoven to those of Schubert. His third and sixth symphonies are complemented by Webern’s Five Movements and Langsamer Satz, both works from the Second Viennese School composed almost 100 years after the two Schubert symphonies on the programme, at a time when classical music was on the verge of modernism.

The MCO returns to the city of Bologna as part of the Bologna Festival, which has been in operation since 1982.
