Sounds of Central Europe

September 2017

On this tour, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra continues its exploration of musical traditions stemming from Central Europe. This theme, which began with the MCO concert at this year’s Lucerne Festival, is one to which the orchestra will return regularly throughout the upcoming seasons.

Both Béla Bartók and Antonín Dvořák are known as composers strongly influenced by folk traditions in their works: Bartók, by Hungarian folk music, and Dvořák, by Slavic melodies. The programme on this tour brings together familiar works that the MCO has performed this year: just a few weeks ago, at this year’s Lucerne Festival, the MCO and Patricia Kopatchinskaja joined forces in Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto, while Rafael Payare conducted an MCO performance of Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony at the Klara Festival in Brussels earlier this spring.

This tour takes the MCO to the Merano Music Festival, where the orchestra performed in the festival’s 2016 edition, as well as Cologne’s Kölner Philharmonie, one of the MCO’s close partners.
