January 2017
The Mahler Chamber Orchestra ushers in 2017 with a residency at the International Music Festival of the Canary Islands, which features both orchestral and chamber music concerts on the seven main islands of the archipelago.
In the two opening concerts of this year’s festival, the MCO performs a diverse programme bringing together Czech music – a specialty of conductor Jakub Hrůša – and the music of local Canarian composer Gustavo Trujillo. Violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann returns with Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 for his second collaboration with the MCO.
Musicians of the MCO then perform five additional chamber music concerts at the festival. This wind octet programme is one of contrasts: it spans from music of the 17th to the 20th century and includes two pieces arranged especially for the MCO.
The MCO most recently appeared on the Canary Islands with John Eliot Gardiner in 2012. For its 2017 residency, the MCO will be performing in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma.
