ABOUT THIS CONCERT

This tour presents two distinct sides of Vienna through a programme featuring works by Schubert and Webern – both composers who are strongly associated with the Austrian capital, albeit at very different times in music history.

In this programme, Artistic Advisor Daniele Gatti and the MCO continue their examination of the symphonic tradition by shifting their focus from the symphonies of Beethoven to those of Schubert. His third and sixth symphonies are complemented by Webern’s Five Movements and Langsamer Satz, both works from the Second Viennese School composed almost 100 years after the two Schubert symphonies on the programme, at a time when classical music was on the verge of modernism.

The MCO has performed in Reggio Emilia regularly since its founding; the orchestra made its most recent appearance here in 2015, also under the baton of Daniele Gatti, in a performance that was part of its Beethoven symphonic cycle.
